Reigniting Memories, Igniting Potential: Big Sisters Soirée presented by Scotiabank 2024
Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland’s Soirée presented by Scotiabank brought together over 400 passionate supporters to The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver for a one-of-a-kind gala event in celebration of girls and gender-diverse youth. The even began with a reception which featured a Wine Mall, Make-Up Station from International Makeup + Hair Artist / Stylist Red Carpet Ready by Christina, a Photobooth from Dang Good Photo’s and even a Retro Gaming Hub. Every year, on October 11th, the world comes together to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to recognizing the unique challenges that girls face globally and advocating for their rights. This day is particularly significant for us at Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, where our mission is to enable transformational mentoring relationships that help self-identifying girls, non-binary, transgender, and gender-diverse youth to reach their full potential. The theme of International Day of the Girl Child aligns with our core values: championing potential, building connections, and supporting youth. Honoring Truth and Reconciliation: Events and Activities to Reflect and Learn
As we reflect on Truth and Reconciliation Day, we honor the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓wətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, on whose lands we are privileged to live and work. At Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, we are deeply committed to fostering connections and showing up for one another. On this day, we recognize the importance of reconciliation, acknowledging the lasting impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples, especially the youth we mentor. We honor their stories, cultures, and strengths, and pledge to continue learning, listening, and taking meaningful steps toward healing and reconciliation. Little Sister Maniya Finds Support and Purpose with Big Sister Shelley
“If I needed to cry or talk about something she was there, and that made a huge difference for me” Maniya, Little Sister. Maniya moved to Vancouver from Iran with her mother and brother in June 2022. It was challenging to begin a new life in an unfamiliar place, as Maniya recalls “New people, new school, new everything”. While adjusting to her new life, Maniya faced feelings of depression and had difficulties making friends in Vancouver. In school, she found herself enjoying Pre-Calculus, but struggling with English. Youth today are filled with big dreams and hope for a better world. However, with the significant barriers standing in their way, it is difficult for a large portion of students to receive the academic support they deserve. Among them are over 300,000 young Canadians in low-income communities who are faced with numerous obstacles that make it more challenging to complete high school (Pathways to Education, n.d.). Big Sister Randi finds friendship and sisterhood with Little Sister Madi
“She was loving, kind, and caring – a tiny package of love.” Randi, Big Sister. Randi was exploring volunteering opportunities before being matched with her Little Sister, Madi. She had recently moved to Vancouver from Alberta and was excited by the prospect of mentoring, having been a part of the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds group mentorship program as a teenager. “I was twenty-one years old, had recently moved to the city, and was starting out in a new career. Big Sisters is delighted to announce the appointment of our newest Board Director, Hayley Woodin. HAYLEY WOODIN Editor-in-Chief, BIV Hayley Woodin is the Editor-in-Chief of Business in Vancouver Media Group, a division of the largest business news group in Western Canada. She is a North American correspondent for BBC Radio’s Business Matters program, an Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar, a Pulitzer Travelling Fellow, a Pulitzer Center Fellow and a Gumshoe Reporting Fellow. Hayley holds a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and is proud to be a board member of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, the KPU Alumni Association and the White Rock Youth Ambassador Program. In this article, we reflect on Indigenous History Month and express our appreciation for the different nations whose traditional and unceded territories we live and operate on in the Lower Mainland. Join us as we acknowledge and learn about the lands of the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), QayQayt First Nation, Kwantlen, q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie), Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen First Nations, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), and Stó:lō Nation. xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) The name xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) relates back to the flowering plant, məθkʷəy̓, which once abundantly grew throughout Musqueam territory.
